There are two main types of gravure cylinders: sleeve cylinders and shafted cylinders.

Gravure cylinders typically come in two types: sleeve and shafted.

Sleeve cylinders have tapered bores on the ends, into which fit the printing machine’s cone shaft.

Sleeve cylinders have a bore on each end. The printing machine has a shaft that fits into the bore to hold the cylinder in place and to spin it. The bore taper is an important part of the cylinder geometry as it fits the cone shaped shaft of the gravure printing machine. The keyway helps prevent slippage during use by locking the cylinder into position on the cone shaft.

Shafted cylinders are built with their own shafts already permanently installed, which are clamped into the printing machine.

Shafted cylinders have shafts built in on each end which fit into the gravure printing machine. Shafted cylinders can also have keyways cut into the outside of the shaft that prevent slippage between the cylinder and the printing machine.

Both types typically have keyways that help lock the cylinders into place and prevent rotational slippage.

American Yuncheng Gravure Cylinder can provide steel gravure cylinder bases, both shafted and sleeve. Contact us for information about gravure base manufacture and engraving.
